History of the Church
Some parts of the church, like stones in the arch near the altar, are very old. They were put there around the years 1170 to 1180. Most of the church you see today was built much later, in the 1200s and 1300s.
The church was fixed up and made to look new again in 1856 by an architect named W. H. Crossland. The beautiful stained glass window at the east end of the church is from the 1400s. It shows 21 pictures telling the story of St Mary, who the church is named after.
The church has a tall tower on its west side. It also has a small bell tower, called a Sanctus bellcote, on the roof of the main part of the church. On January 24, 1968, the church was officially named a Grade I listed building because of its special history and architecture.
The Church Today
The Church of St Mary is still an active church today. It is part of a larger group of churches in the area. This group includes "Saint Mary the Virgin, Elland and All Saints, Elland". These churches are part of the Diocese of Leeds, which is a big area managed by the Church of England.
The church follows a style of worship that is sometimes called "Central" or "modern Catholic" within the Church of England.
