Churicheni Island (which is also called ostrov Churicheni in Bulgarian) is a small island in Antarctica. It's a special place because it's mostly free of ice, unlike much of the icy continent! This island is part of a group called the Onogur Islands.
Churicheni Island is located off the northwest coast of Robert Island. It's quite small, about 230 meters long and 140 meters wide. Imagine a couple of football fields end-to-end! A narrow passage, only 100 meters wide, separates it from the bigger Robert Island. The island is named after a town in Southwestern Bulgaria called Churicheni.
Where is Churicheni Island?
Churicheni Island is found in the South Shetland Islands. These islands are a chain of islands near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. You can find it at these coordinates: 62°21′02.5″S 59°40′33″W / 62.350694°S 59.67583°W.
It's located about 1.78 kilometers north-northeast of a spot called Misnomer Point. It's also very close to Shipot Point, only 190 meters to its west. Scientists and explorers have been mapping this area for a long time. British maps showed the island in 1968, and Bulgarian maps updated the information in 2009.
Exploring the South Shetland Islands
The South Shetland Islands are a group of islands that are part of the Antarctic Treaty System. This means that many countries have agreed to use Antarctica only for peaceful scientific research. No country owns the land there! These islands are home to lots of wildlife, like penguins and seals. They are also a popular spot for scientific expeditions and even some tourist cruises.
