A Look Back: Cienegueta's History

How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.

Long ago, Puerto Rico was part of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S.

Counting the People

In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This is called a census. They found that Cienegueta and a nearby area called Mavilla had 982 people living there together. Over the years, the number of people living in Cienegueta has changed.
