History of Cimarron
Cimarron was first settled in 1878. Its name comes from a path on the Chisholm Trail. This path led travelers toward the Cimarron River.
Between 1887 and 1893, a "county seat war" happened in Gray County. This was a fight over which town would be the county's main city. Famous Old West figures like Bat Masterson and Bill Tilghman were involved. After this dispute, Cimarron became the permanent county seat of Gray County.
Early in the morning of June 10, 1893, a group led by Bill Doolin robbed a train. This happened near Cimarron.
In 2016, an Amtrak train called the Southwest Chief had an accident near Cimarron. The train was going from Los Angeles to Chicago. It derailed because the tracks were damaged. A truck from a nearby business had gone out of control and hit the tracks earlier. The truck was moved, but no one reported the damage to the authorities or the railroad company. This accident caused 28 people to be injured.
