Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ciriaco del Llano was a Spanish General who led royalist forces during the Mexican War of Independence. He is well-known for commanding troops in the Siege of Cuautla.

He was born in 1756 in Abanto (Somorrostro), Spain. He joined the Spanish Navy in 1775. He rose through the ranks to become a frigate captain. Later, he became a brigadier in the royal armies of Spain.

When the Mexican War of Independence began, Llano was a naval captain. He commanded a frigate, which is a type of warship. In August 1811, he fought in his first campaign against the Mexican rebels. He won a clear victory against them at the Battle of Llanos de Apan. Because of this success, he was promoted to the rank of colonel.

However, his forces were later defeated at the Battle of Izúcar in February 1812. Mexican rebels, led by Mariano Matamoros, routed his troops. Llano showed great skill again during the Siege of Cuautla in 1812. For his actions there, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier.

After the Siege of Cuautla, he was assigned as the quartermaster of Puebla for a short time. Soon after, he was given command of an army. He defeated a rebel army led by Mariano Matamoros at the Battle of Puruarán in January 1814. Llano's forces successfully captured Matamoros. Matamoros was tried and executed shortly after that battle.

In 1815, Llano was the chief general of an expeditionary group at Cerro de Cóporo. He was forced to retreat after an attack that did not succeed.

From 1816 to 1821, he served as the Intendant of Puebla. This was an important administrative role. In July 1821, a rebel army led by Nicolás Bravo surrounded him at Puebla. Llano was forced to surrender his forces. Agustín Cosme Damián de Iturbide y Arámburu, who would later become the emperor of Mexico, was fighting for the Spanish Crown at that time and also surrendered.

According to the agreement, all the troops under Llano's command had to be sent to Havana. After losing his army, Ciriaco del Llano returned to Spain.
