City Point National Cemetery is a special place in Hopewell, Virginia. It is a United States National Cemetery, which means it is a burial ground for soldiers and veterans who served our country. This cemetery is located in the community of City Point. It is managed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

The cemetery covers about 6.7 acres, which is like seven football fields. By the end of 2005, it was the final resting place for 6,909 people. The Hampton National Cemetery helps manage this important site.

Why is City Point National Cemetery Important?

This cemetery has a deep connection to the American Civil War. During the war, the area around City Point was a huge supply base for the Union army. General Ulysses S. Grant set up this important depot.

City Point was a perfect spot because it was close to Richmond, Virginia. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. This made City Point a key place for Union soldiers to prepare for battles.

How the Cemetery Was Created

After many battles, soldiers were buried in small, temporary graves. Some were in seven hospital cemeteries nearby. Others were in makeshift plots right on the battlefields. The City Point National Cemetery was created to bring all these soldiers together.

The goal was to give them a proper and respectful burial. This way, their sacrifices would be remembered. The cemetery was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

What Monuments Can You See?

One of the most important monuments at the cemetery is the Army of the James Monument. This monument is made of white marble. It stands 20 feet tall, which is about as tall as a two-story building.

It was put up in 1865, right after the Civil War ended. This monument honors the soldiers who served in the Army of the James. It helps us remember their bravery and service.
