Ciudad Hidalgo is a city in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is the main town of the Suchiate area, which is the southernmost part of Mexico. In 2010, about 14,606 people lived there.
This city is a very important crossing point on the border between Mexico and Guatemala. A special bridge called the Puente Rodolfo Robles connects Ciudad Hidalgo with Ciudad Tecún Umán in Guatemala. This bridge is used by both cars and trains.
History of Ciudad Hidalgo
Ciudad Hidalgo was started in 1882. It was founded by a group of people from a place called Ayutla, San Marcos in Guatemala. They moved because they did not want to stay on the Guatemalan side after a border agreement was made in 1882.
The new settlement was built on land that used to be a large farm called Los Cerros. It was known by two names: Suchiate, after the nearby Río Suchiate river, or Ignacio Mariscal, after a local landowner.
On July 4, 1925, Suchiate was officially made a village. The area around it became the municipality of Suchiate. Later, on July 24, 1952, the town of Suchiate was given city status. Its name was changed to Ciudad Hidalgo. This new name honored Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a hero of Mexican independence.
Transportation and Travel
The Tren Interoceánico (Interoceanic Train) is a train network that plans to build a station in Ciudad Hidalgo. This station will be part of its Line K. It will be the last stop on Line K before the train crosses the border into Guatemala.
The second part of this train line, which includes the station in Ciudad Hidalgo, is planned to open around mid-2025. This will make travel and trade easier between Mexico and Guatemala.
