Discovering Perico: A Brief History
Perico started as a small settlement in 1913. It grew around a new train station called Estación Perico. Later, during the time Juan Domingo Perón was president (from 1946 to 1955), the town was renamed. Many places were given new names during his time.
The Airport's Story
In 1961, Governor Horacio Guzmán picked Perico for a new airport. It was called the El Cadillal International Airport. The airport opened in 1967. Years later, in 1992, it was renamed in honor of Governor Guzmán.
Tobacco Farming in Perico
Perico has long been important for growing and selling tobacco. In 1969, local tobacco farmers created the Cooperativa de Tabacaleros de Jujuy. This cooperative helps them work together. Soon after, a big Massalin Particulares cigarette factory opened in the town.
The Railway and Trade
Perico is located between the capital city, San Salvador de Jujuy, and the city of Salta. This made its train station very busy. It was one of the most active stations in the area. However, after 1992, the railway system was privatized. This led to the closure of Perico's train station.
Modern Developments
Today, the National Agricultural Technology Institute has a facility in Perico. This institute helps with farming research. Also, a special area called a Zona Franca (which means "Free Economic Zone") was set up in Perico. This zone helps businesses trade more easily. The town's Nobleza Piccardo plant became the biggest producer and exporter of Blue Virginia tobacco products in Argentina.
