History of Ciudadela
A long time ago, when Argentina was still a colony, the area where Ciudadela is now was a large cattle ranch. This ranch was known as Rancho de Castro.
In 1806, during the British invasions of the Río de la Plata, a very important person named Santiago de Liniers used this area as a base for his operations. Later, the first small town here was named Villa Liniers to honor him.
Around 1902, a large military camp was set up in the area. The town really started to grow when the Ferrocarril Oeste railway arrived in 1910. Ciudadela was officially established in that same year. Over time, it grew bigger and bigger around the railway station. Eventually, it became part of the large group of cities known as Greater Buenos Aires.
Ciudadela had about 73,155 people living there in 2001. It has a busy shopping area along Avenida Rivadavia. You can also find two Jewish cemeteries here. The old military barracks are now the Argentine Army Museum, where you can learn about the country's military history.
