Claife Heights is a lovely hilly area found in the famous Lake District in England. It's very close to the large and beautiful Windermere lake, located in the county of Cumbria. This area is known as a 'Marilyn' because it stands out quite a bit from the land around it. To be a Marilyn, a hill needs to have a 'prominence' of at least 150 meters (about 492 feet). Claife Heights has a prominence of 177 meters (581 feet).

Discovering Claife Heights

Claife Heights is not a single, sharp mountain peak. Instead, it's a collection of hills and woodlands. The highest parts of Claife Heights reach about 270 meters (886 feet) above sea level. It's a popular spot for people who enjoy walking and exploring nature.

Famous Walks and Views

A well-known writer and walker named Alfred Wainwright wrote about Claife Heights in his book, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. He described it as a "delightful" place. He even suggested a circular walk that starts from a village called Far Sawrey. This walk passes by a pretty small lake known as Moss Eccles Tarn.

Wainwright noted that the area used to be even more open and offered wider views. Over time, some areas were planted with trees for forestry. This changed some of the walking paths and made certain views less open than they once were. Even so, Claife Heights remains a wonderful place to visit and enjoy the peaceful outdoors.

Nature and Scenery

The area around Claife Heights is full of natural beauty. You can find different types of trees, plants, and wildlife here. Walking through the woods and over the hills, you might spot various birds or small animals. The views of the surrounding Lake District landscape, including parts of Windermere, can be quite stunning, especially from higher points. It's a great place to connect with nature and enjoy the quiet beauty of the English countryside.
