Claire Saffitz (born September 16, 1986) is an American food writer, chef, and YouTube personality. She is known for making gourmet versions of popular snack foods. She also writes cookbooks and hosts her own cooking show online.
Before 2020, Claire worked at Bon Appétit magazine. She was a contributing editor and starred in many videos on their YouTube channel. Her most famous series was Gourmet Makes. In this show, she would try to recreate fancy versions of everyday snacks.
Since leaving Bon Appétit, Claire has written two cookbooks. Both Dessert Person and What's for Dessert became very popular. She also has her own YouTube channel and creates recipes for NYT Cooking.

Early Life and Education
Claire Saffitz was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her family has a history of baking. Her great-grandfather was a baker who moved to the United States from what is now Ukraine a long time ago.
Claire went to Captain Elementary and then Clayton High School. She graduated from high school in 2005. After that, she attended Harvard University. She earned a degree in U.S. history and literature in 2009.
She then went to École Grégoire-Ferrandi in Paris, France. There, she studied French cooking and pastry making. Claire also spent four months working at Spring Restaurant. Later, she moved to Montreal, Québec. In 2013, she earned a master's degree in history from McGill University. Her studies focused on the history of French cooking from a long time ago.
Career Highlights
Working at Bon Appétit (2013–2020)
Claire Saffitz started working at Bon Appétit in 2013. She began as a recipe tester. This meant she would try out new recipes to make sure they worked. She then became a senior food editor. She held this full-time job until August 2018.
In November 2018, Claire returned to Bon Appétit. She worked as a freelance recipe developer and video host. This meant she created recipes and appeared in their videos.
In July 2017, the show Gourmet Makes started. On this show, Claire tried to make fancy versions of popular snacks. These included Doritos, Twinkies, and Gushers. Gourmet Makes became very popular on YouTube. It gained many dedicated fans on social media. People said Claire was great at turning everyday snacks into amazing, fancy dishes.
In February 2019, Bon Appétit launched two new shows with Claire. These were Bon Appétit’s Baking School and Making Perfect. Claire also appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in January 2020.
After Bon Appétit (2020–Present)
In June 2020, the editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit resigned. This happened after a photo of him caused widespread criticism. The company also faced criticism for how it treated employees of color. A food editor said that employees of color were paid less.
Because of these issues, Claire announced she was thinking about her future with Bon Appétit. Her contract had ended in May 2020. In October 2020, she officially said she would not renew her contract.
Claire's first cookbook, Dessert Person: Recipes and Guidance for Baking with Confidence, came out on October 20, 2020. It was published by Clarkson Potter. The book quickly became a New York Times Best Seller. It reached No. 2 on the "Advice, How-To & Miscellaneous" list. In 2021, Dessert Person won the Julia Child First Book Award.
In December 2020, Claire started her own YouTube channel. She began by showing how to make recipes from her Dessert Person cookbook. Vincent Cross, who used to work at Bon Appétit, produces her channel.
In January 2021, Claire started working with NYT Cooking. She has appeared on their YouTube channel. In May 2021, Claire made another appearance on The Tonight Show.
Claire's second cookbook, What's for Dessert: Simple Recipes for Dessert People, was released on November 8, 2022. This book also became a New York Times Best Seller.
In April 2024, Claire launched a new series on her YouTube channel. It is called Claire Recreates. This show is similar to her popular Gourmet Makes series.
Personal Life
As of March 2020, Claire Saffitz lives in New York City. She lives with her husband, Harris Mayer-Selinger. He is also a chef. The couple bought a home in upstate New York in late 2020. In December 2024, Claire announced that she was expecting their first child.
