Claire Saffitz (born September 16, 1986) is an American food writer, chef, and popular YouTube personality. She used to work at Bon Appétit magazine. There, she starred in shows like Gourmet Makes. In this show, she made fancy versions of popular snack foods. She did this by figuring out how they were made.
After leaving Bon Appétit in 2020, Claire wrote two cookbooks. Both Dessert Person and What's for Dessert became New York Times Best Sellers. She also started her own successful YouTube channel. Claire continues to create recipes for places like New York Times Cooking.

Claire's Early Life and School
Claire Saffitz was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her family is Ashkenazi Jewish. Her great-grandfather came to the United States from what is now Ukraine. He was a baker before he moved.
Claire went to Captain Elementary and Clayton High School. She finished high school in 2005. She then studied history and literature at Harvard University. She graduated in 2009.
After Harvard, Claire went to École Grégoire-Ferrandi in Paris, France. There, she learned about French cooking and baking. She also worked at Spring Restaurant for four months. Later, she moved to Montreal, Québec. She earned a master's degree in history from McGill University in 2013. She focused on French cooking history.
Claire's Career in Food
Working at Bon Appétit (2013–2020)
Claire Saffitz started working at Bon Appétit magazine in 2013. She began as a recipe tester. She worked her way up to a senior food editor. In 2018, she left her full-time job. But she came back later that year as a freelance recipe developer and video host.
In July 2017, the show Gourmet Makes started. Claire tried to remake or improve popular snacks. These included Doritos, Twinkies, and Gushers. Gourmet Makes became very popular on YouTube. Many people loved watching Claire's work. Her creations turned simple snacks into amazing food.
In 2019, Bon Appétit launched two more shows with Claire. These were Bon Appétit’s Baking School and Making Perfect. Claire also appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in January 2020.
Leaving Bon Appétit and Beyond (2020–Present)
In June 2020, there were some big changes at Bon Appétit. The editor-in-chief resigned. The company also faced criticism about how it treated employees. Claire announced that her contract with the company had ended. In October 2020, she decided not to renew it.
Claire's first cookbook, Dessert Person, came out on October 20, 2020. It quickly became a New York Times Best Seller. The book was also nominated for important cooking awards. It won the Julia Child First Book Award in 2021.
In December 2020, Claire started her own YouTube channel. She began by showing how to make recipes from her Dessert Person book. Her channel is produced by Vincent Cross, who also worked at Bon Appétit.
In January 2021, Claire started working with NYT Cooking. She appeared on their YouTube channel too. She made another appearance on The Tonight Show in May 2021.
Claire's second cookbook, What's for Dessert, was released on November 8, 2022. It also became a New York Times Best Seller. In April 2024, Claire launched a new series on her YouTube channel. It's called Claire Recreates. This show is similar to her popular Gourmet Makes series.
Claire's Personal Life
Claire Saffitz lives in New York City with her husband, Harris Mayer-Selinger. He is also a chef. They got married in 2020. They also bought a home in upstate New York in late 2020. In December 2024, Claire shared that they are expecting their first child.
