Clarence's History: How It Got Its Name
The area where Clarence now stands was first called "Onion Grove." This was because many wild onions grew along Mill Creek.
Later, the village moved to be closer to a new railroad line. The name was changed to "Clarence." This new name was suggested by Richard Gere, who came from Clarence, New York.
Clarence officially became a city in 1866.
