Clarendon Lamb Worrell (born July 20, 1854 – died August 10, 1934) was an important leader in the Anglican Church of Canada. He was the 5th Primate, which means he was the main leader of the church in Canada.

Growing Up and School

Clarendon Lamb Worrell was born in Smith's Falls, Ontario, on July 20, 1854. His parents were Reverend Canon John Worrell and Elizabeth Lamb. He went to local schools in Smith's Falls until he was 17 years old.

After that, he went to Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario. He was a very good student there and even became the head boy. In June 1873, he finished his studies at the University of Trinity College. He earned many awards, especially for his skills in mathematics.

In September of that year, Worrell started teaching math at Bishop's College School. He later taught at Hellmuth College in London, Ontario. Another future church leader, Arthur Sweatman, was the headmaster there. Worrell also taught in Hamilton, Ontario, and Cobourg, Ontario. In 1878, he returned to Trinity College to study religion.

His Work in the Church

In 1881, Clarendon Worrell became a deacon, which is the first step to becoming a priest in the Anglican Church. He worked at Christ Church in Gananoque, Ontario. The next year, he moved to Brockville and also became the headmaster of the Brockville Collegiate Institute.

In 1884, he became a priest. He then worked as a rector (a priest in charge of a church) in Williamsburg. Two years later, he moved to Morrisburg to be a rector there.

By 1891, he was the rector of a church in Kingston, Ontario. At the same time, he taught English literature at the Royal Military College of Canada until 1904. In 1901, he was named the Archdeacon of Ontario, another important role in the church.

In October 1904, Worrell was chosen to be the Bishop of Nova Scotia. A bishop is a senior leader who oversees many churches. He served as Bishop until 1915.

On February 10, 1915, Worrell was elected Metropolitan of Canada. This meant he was a leader for a whole group of church areas. Later, he was offered the chance to become the Bishop of Bermuda, but he did not accept the full-time role. However, he did help oversee the church in Bermuda for a short time and visited twice.

In September 1931, Clarendon Worrell was chosen to be the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada. This was the highest position in the church in Canada, and everyone agreed he was the right person for the job. He served as Primate until he passed away on August 10, 1934, after being ill for a few weeks.
