History of Clarington
Clarington started as a very small settlement. In 1833, it was described as having only two stores, one tavern, a doctor, and ten houses.
Growth as a River Port
During the mid-1800s, Clarington grew a lot! It became a busy river port town. At its peak, nearly 1,500 people lived there. The village had a cigar factory, a blacksmith shop, restaurants, and places for travelers to stay. Many people worked at the local boat yard.
The Mozena Brothers Boat Yard was famous for designing and building many steam "packet-boats" right there in Clarington. These boats were used for travel and carrying goods on western rivers. One of their most famous boats was the Liberty, built in 1912. You can even see a mural of this boat in town today!
By the late 1920s, boat building started to slow down. The Mozena Brothers sold their business to Cook Brothers & Thomas Boat Yard. Even after that, barges, small gas-powered ferries, and other boats continued to be built in Clarington until 1941. Clarington was also the last port on the Ohio River before crossing the Mason–Dixon line a few miles south. A well-known author and river expert, J. Mack Gamble, lived in Clarington his whole life.
Ohio Valley River Museum
The Ohio Valley River Museum is a non-profit organization in Clarington. Its goal is to protect and share the history of the village. It also teaches about western river steamboats and how river industries have impacted the area. The museum is run by a board of directors.
Recent Developments
In recent years, Clarington has become important for oil and gas activities. This is because of discoveries of natural gas deep underground in the Utica and Marcellus formations. In late 2014, a company called Appalachian Resins planned to build a large plant in Clarington. This plant would use a part of natural gas called ethane to create ethylene. This project is a big step for the economy of Monroe County, especially after the closure of the Ormet aluminum plant.
