Clarksville is a special kind of community called an unincorporated community. It's located in Howard County, Maryland. This area is known for being one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.
The community got its name from William Clark. He was a farmer who owned a lot of the land here. Clarksville also became a postal stop on July 4, 1851.
Some of the most expensive homes on the East Coast are found in Clarksville. Property values here are among the highest in the entire country. In 2023, the average yearly household income in Clarksville was about $248,722.
The village of River Hill is right next to Clarksville. This area is part of the newer developments of Columbia.

History of Clarksville
In 1699, a person named Thomas Browne explored the river near where Clarksville is today. The area was first settled with large tobacco farms. These farms, like Folly Quarter, used enslaved people for labor.
In 1838, Dr. William Watkins suggested creating a new area called the "Howard District." This district was part of Anne Arundel County at the time. In 1851, it officially became Howard County.
Clarksville got its name from the Clark family. They moved to the Howard District from Ireland in 1790. The land they bought included a blacksmith shop run by an African American man named Jack Howard.
In the 1930s, the Clarksville post office recorded only 65 people living there. The main jobs were farming and mining limestone. There were also many apple orchards between Clarksville and Ashton.
In 1869, Clarksville became the end point of the Ellicott City and Clarksville turnpike. This was a ten-mile private toll road. It was built over an old road and later became Route 108.
