Claudia's Journey in Science
Claudia grew up in Seattle, Washington. She went to the University of Washington. There, she earned degrees in Chemistry and Oceanography in 1992. Later, she earned her PhD in Oceanography in 1999. This was from a special program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
After finishing her studies, Claudia became a research fellow. She worked at the University of Hawaii. In 2002, she joined the University of South Carolina (USC). She became a full professor in 2010. She also led USC's Marine Science Program for students.

Claudia Benitez-Nelson's research is all about the ocean. She studies how tiny particles move from the ocean's surface to its deep parts. This is important for understanding how the ocean works.
