Claudine Auger (born Claudine Oger; April 26, 1941 – December 18, 2019) was a French actress. She was most famous for playing a Bond girl, named Dominique "Domino" Derval, in the James Bond movie Thunderball (1965). Before acting, she was crowned Miss France Monde (France's representative for the Miss World beauty pageant). She also came in second place in the 1958 Miss World contest.
Early Life
Claudine Auger was born in Paris, France. She went to St. Joan of Arc College. Later, she studied acting at the Conservatoire de Paris. She even got her first movie role while she was still in school!
Career
Claudine Auger started her acting career with a small part in the movie Testament of Orpheus (1960). She later married writer-director Pierre Gaspard-Huit. He cast her in several of his films, like Le Masque de fer (1962) and Kali Yug: Goddess of Vengeance (1963). In 1966, she also appeared in the World War II movie Triple Cross.
Her big break came when she was on vacation in Nassau. A movie producer saw her and asked her to try out for the James Bond film Thunderball (1965). The character, Domino, was originally supposed to be Italian. But Claudine impressed the filmmakers so much that they changed the character to be French, just for her! Even though she worked hard on her English, another actress spoke her lines in the movie.
Thunderball made Claudine Auger a star in Europe. She continued to act in many European films. She even appeared with other Bond girls, like Ursula Andress, in the comedy Anyone Can Play (1968). She also starred in the mystery film Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971) with two future Bond girls, Barbara Bouchet and Barbara Bach. Later in her career, she appeared in the British TV show The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes in 1994.
