Claudio Magris (born April 10, 1939) is a well-known Italian scholar, translator, and writer. A scholar is someone who studies a lot about a certain topic. A translator changes words from one language to another. He also served as a senator for the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy from 1994 to 1996. A senator is a type of politician who helps make laws for their country.

Life and Work

Claudio Magris studied at the University of Turin in Italy. There, he focused on German studies, which means he learned a lot about German language, literature, and culture. Since 1978, he has been a professor at the University of Trieste. He teaches about modern German literature.

He writes essays and columns for important newspapers. One of these is the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. He also writes for other newspapers and journals across Europe.
