Sir Claudius Stephen Hunter (born February 24, 1775 – died April 20, 1851) was an important lawyer and a Lord Mayor of London. He was also the 1st Baronet of his family.

Life Story of Sir Claudius

Early Life and Family

Claudius Stephen Hunter was born on February 24, 1775, in a place called Beech Hill, Berkshire, near Reading, Berkshire. He was the youngest son of Henry Hunter, who was a barrister (a type of lawyer). His mother was Mary Sloane. Interestingly, his sister, Mary, was the mother of a very famous religious leader named Cardinal Manning.

Education and Early Career

Claudius went to school in Hackney, London, and also studied in Switzerland. He later decided to become a lawyer. He started working as a solicitor in 1797. A solicitor is a lawyer who advises clients and prepares legal documents. He became very successful in his work.

Public Service and Achievements

Sir Claudius took on many important roles:

  • In 1804, he became an alderman for the Bassishaw area of London. An alderman is a senior member of a city council.
  • He also joined the Royal East London Militia, which was a local military group. He became a Colonel in 1810, showing his dedication to public service.
  • In 1808, he was chosen as Sheriff of London. The Sheriff helps with legal and ceremonial duties in the city.

Becoming Lord Mayor

Sir Claudius stopped working as a solicitor in 1811. On November 9, 1811, he became the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very important and old role, leading the City of London's government. He brought back many old traditions during his time as Lord Mayor, and his public parade was very grand.

Because of his great service, he was given the special title of baronet on December 11, 1812. A baronet is a title of honor, like a knight, that can be passed down in the family. He also received an honorary degree from the university of Oxford in 1819.

Later Years and Legacy

Sir Claudius continued to serve the city for many years. He moved to a different area of London, called Bridge Without, in 1835. By the time he passed away, he was known as the 'father of the city,' meaning he was the longest-serving alderman.

He died on April 20, 1851, at Mortimer Hill, Reading. His legacy includes his dedication to law and his significant contributions to the City of London as its Lord Mayor. His grandson, Claudius Stephen Paul, later inherited his baronetcy.
