Clawson is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, in the United States. It is a northern suburb of Detroit. Clawson is about 19 kilometers (12 miles) north of downtown Detroit. In 2020, about 11,389 people lived in the city. Clawson's motto is "Little City with a Big Heart."

History of Clawson
Early History and Native Americans
Long ago, the area where Clawson is now was home to the Potawatomi people. They were one of the first groups of people to live in the Detroit area. The Potawatomi traded animal furs with French and English settlers for many years.
How Clawson Got Its Name
The city's name, Clawson, came from a mistake! It was supposed to be named after an early settler, John C. Lawson.
When it was first settled by European Americans in 1829, it had a different name: Pumachug and The Corners. This name came from the sounds of the cider mill and saw mill at the main crossroads. People said it sounded like "pum-a-chug, pum-a-chug."
Clawson became a village in 1920. Later, in 1940, it officially became a city.
