How Clawson Got Its Name

The city's name, Clawson, came from a mistake! It was supposed to be named after an early settler, John C. Lawson.

When it was first settled by European Americans in 1829, it had a different name: Pumachug and The Corners. This name came from the sounds of the cider mill and saw mill at the main crossroads. People said it sounded like "pum-a-chug, pum-a-chug."

Clawson became a village in 1920. Later, in 1940, it officially became a city.
