History of Claypool
Claypool was officially planned and mapped out in 1873. However, the town's post office has been open much longer, since 1841.
Railroad Importance
For a long time, Claypool was a very important place for trains. It was a major meeting point for two big railroad lines: the Big Four and the Nickel Plate lines. This made it a busy center for transportation.
Famous Basketball Players
Claypool is proud to be the hometown of two amazing basketball players from Indiana.
- Judi Warren was the very first Indiana Miss Basketball in 1976. This is a special award given to the best female high school basketball player in the state. Judi was later added to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
- Kevin Ault was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1996. This award goes to the best male high school basketball player in Indiana.
Both Judi and Kevin played basketball for Warsaw Community High School.
Claypool in the News
The town of Claypool was even featured in Time magazine. An article about the town appeared in the September 8, 1980, issue of the famous magazine.
Biodiesel Plant Development
In 2006, a French company called Louis Dreyfus Agriculture Industries chose Claypool for a new factory. This factory makes biodiesel, which is a type of fuel made from plants. When it was finished, it became the largest biodiesel factory in Indiana.

Claypool Town Flag
Since April 17, 2018, Claypool has had its very own official town flag. This special flag was designed by students at Claypool Elementary School. They presented their design to the town council, who then voted to approve it.
The flag has several symbols that tell the story of Claypool:
- Two solid black lines represent the important railroad tracks that run through the town. These tracks played a big role in Claypool's history.
- Three stars stand for the three main crops grown in the area: corn, wheat, and soybeans.
- The flag's colors are orange, black, and white. These colors represent the former Claypool High School and the current Claypool Elementary School.
- Orange also symbolizes basketball, celebrating the town's famous basketball players, including the first Miss Basketball and the 1996 Mr. Basketball.
- The date 1873 is on the flag, showing the year the town was officially planned.
