Discovering Clear Springs' Past
Clear Springs has a long and interesting history. It started as a small settlement in Texas.
Early Settlers and Naming the Town
German families were the first to move to this area. They arrived in the 1840s. The settlement was named Clear Springs because of the natural springs there. These springs provided fresh water. Today, Lake Dunlap covers the spot where these springs once flowed. A famous person named James Bowie had surveyed the land where Clear Springs is located.
Growing the Community in the 1800s
In 1873, the community built a cotton gin and a general store. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds. Farmers brought their cotton to be weighed, sold, and processed here.
Clear Springs even had its own post office. It opened in 1874. At first, the post office was called Bernhardsville. But in 1875, its name officially changed to Clear Springs.
Life in Clear Springs: From 1890s to Today
By the 1890s, about 100 people lived in Clear Springs. They had the general store and cotton gin. The post office closed in 1906, but people still lived in the community.
Later, the general store became a dance hall and saloon. This dance hall was very popular. It was the only place like it for many miles around. In 1946, Clear Springs had two businesses and a school. The school joined the New Braunfels school district in the 1950s. By 1990, about 60 people lived there. They had several businesses and a church.
Today, the old Clear Springs Hall and Store is a restaurant. It is called Clear Springs Restaurant. The restaurant tries to keep the old German small-town feel. It also preserves the history of the building.
