A Look at Clearlake Highlands
Clearlake Highlands is a place with an interesting past. It started as a small settlement and grew into a popular spot.
Early Days and Native People
Americans first settled in the Clearlake area in the late 1860s. Before that, the land was home to the Pomo Indians. They were the original inhabitants of this region. Evidence of their ancient presence, like tools and pottery, has been found near Cache Creek and Borax Lake.
From Farms to Fun Resorts
For many years, Clearlake was mostly a place for farming and ranching. People grew crops and raised animals. But in the 1920s, things began to change. The area became a popular place for tourists to visit. People came to enjoy the beautiful Clear Lake and the surrounding nature.
In 1925, a large part of what is now Clearlake was divided into many small plots of land. These plots were often just 50 by 100 feet. At that time, many basic things like paved roads were not built. Some roads were only planned on paper and never actually created.
Tourism and the "Bass Capital"
Historically, tourism has been very important to Clearlake. Visitors are drawn to the area because of Clear Lake. This lake is the largest natural lake in California. It is famous for its fishing and is even called "The Bass Capital of the West." This means it's a great place to catch bass fish!
The number of tourists has gone up and down over the years. But Clear Lake remains a key attraction for the community.
