Cliffdell is a small community in Yakima County, Washington. It is not a city with its own government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community. This means it is a place where people live, but it is governed by the larger county.

Cliffdell is located in the western part of Washington state. It sits about 23 miles west of a town called Ellensburg.

History of Cliffdell

The community of Cliffdell has an interesting past. It was not always known by its current name.

How Cliffdell Got Its Name

Originally, this area was called Spring Flats. This name likely came from the flat land and natural springs found there. In 1920, the community was renamed Cliffdell. This new name was chosen to honor two friends of a local homesteader. Their names were Cliff and Della Schott, and they were from Seattle.

Early Development

A man named Russell Davison was an important homesteader in the area. He helped develop much of Cliffdell. His goal was to create places for people to build summer homes. This made Cliffdell a popular spot for vacations.

A Historic Army Camp

Cliffdell was also once the location of a temporary army camp. This camp was used in 1855. Captain William O. Slaughter led the soldiers who stayed there.

Where is Cliffdell?

Cliffdell is found along State Route 410 (SR 410). The beautiful Naches River also flows through the community. This makes it a scenic place to visit or live.
