Main Characters
- Clifford: Clifford is a giant red dog who is shy, gentle, and very friendly. He is also loyal, lovable, a bit clumsy, and always tries to be helpful. Sometimes, his huge size gets him into funny situations, or his friends might tempt him into a little mischief. Clifford's size can change a bit in the stories, but he's usually about 25 feet tall! The idea for Clifford's name came from an imaginary friend of the author's wife. Clifford's best friend and owner is a girl named Emily Elizabeth. He also has a mom, two brothers, and two sisters. The character of Clifford was created when an editor suggested Norman Bridwell write a story about a drawing he made of a tiny girl and a dog the size of a horse.
- Emily Elizabeth: Emily Elizabeth is Clifford's owner and best friend. She is an eight-year-old girl who is friendly, curious, and always ready to help. You often see her riding on Clifford's back! She's also a great skater and good at soccer. Emily Elizabeth was named after Norman Bridwell's own daughter. In the TV show, her full name is Emily Elizabeth Howard. In the show, she gets Clifford as a surprise gift for her 6th birthday.
