Early Settlement and Naming
The first European-American settlers arrived in the Climax area around 1825. More people began to settle here in 1838. Climax officially became a village in 1899.
The village got its unique name in 1834. A family led by Judge Caleb Eldred had been searching for good farmland for months. When they finally found a beautiful prairie, Judge Eldred's son, Daniel B. Eldred, climbed a tree to get a better look. He then exclaimed, "This caps the climax of everything we saw!" This phrase meant it was the best thing they had seen, and so the name "Climax" stuck.
First Free Mail Service
Climax made history on December 3, 1896. It was the very first community in Michigan to receive free mail delivery directly to people's homes in rural areas. This service is known as Rural Free Delivery, and it was provided by the United States Postal Service.
