History of Scotts
The land where Scotts is located was first officially given to Dan Wheeler in 1835. Later, in 1847, a person named Samuel Scott settled here. Because of him, the community became known as Scotts Crossing. This name was later shortened to just Scotts.
A post office was opened in Scotts on February 19, 1872. Servetus Bathrick was the first postmaster. In 1874, Bathrick also helped to officially plan and map out the community.
Earthquake in 2015
On May 2, 2015, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake happened in West Michigan. The center of the earthquake was less than one mile northwest of Scotts. People felt this earthquake from Wisconsin all the way to southern Ontario, Canada. This event showed that there was a previously unknown fault line (a crack in the Earth's crust) stretching from Kalamazoo to Coldwater.

Schools in Scotts
Scotts used to have its own school district for students from kindergarten to 12th grade. This was called Scotts School. In 1946, it joined with the nearby school district in Climax. Together, they formed the Climax-Scotts Community Schools.
Today, the school facilities are split between the two communities. Climax-Scotts Elementary School (for grades K-5) is located in Scotts. It is on the same spot where the old Scotts High School used to be. The Climax-Scotts Jr./Sr. High School (for grades 7-12) is about 7 miles (11 km) northeast in Climax. The main offices, bus services, and sports facilities are also in Climax.
In 2006, the original school bell from Scotts School was found and fixed up. It is now on display outside the Scotts Community Center.
