Clinton is a small, historic place in Amador County, California. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Clinton is located about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Pine Grove. It sits high up, at an elevation of 1972 feet (601 meters).
This little town has had a few different names over the years, including Sarahville, Sarahsville, and Lincoln. Today, Clinton is a charming spot with old buildings and homes. About 45 people live there.
Clinton's Gold Rush History
Clinton was a very busy place during the 1850s. It was a hub for gold mining. Miners used a method called placer mining. This meant they would look for gold flakes and nuggets in riverbeds and streams.
Later, in the 1880s, people started quartz mining. This involved digging deep into the earth to find gold embedded in quartz rock. A post office even operated in Clinton from 1856 to 1859.
A Special Role in Elections
Clinton had a unique and important role in Amador County's history. For a long time, the votes from Clinton were always counted last during elections. This meant that the results from Clinton could often decide who won the county elections!
