Clodovil Hernandes (17 June 1937 – 17 March 2009) was a famous Brazilian fashion designer, television presenter, and politician. He became well-known as a fashion designer in the 1960s and 1970s. Later, he started a long career in television that lasted over 40 years.

In politics, Clodovil Hernandes served as a congressman for the state of São Paulo. He was known for making statements that sometimes caused controversy. He was also the first openly gay congressman in Brazil.

Biography

Early Life

Clodovil Hernandes was born on June 17, 1937, in Elisiário, Brazil. He was raised by a Spanish immigrant couple, Diego Hernández and Isabel Sánchez. He had a very strong bond with his adoptive mother.

One of his ideas as a politician was to create an "Adoptive Mother's Day." This special day would be celebrated on the third Sunday of May. Clodovil went to a Catholic school. Besides his native Portuguese, he also spoke Spanish and French.

Fashion Designer

Clodovil started working as a stylist when he was just 16 years old. In the 1960s, he became very famous. He was known for designing beautiful and unique haute couture clothing.

Television Career

In the 1980s, Clodovil became a popular TV personality. He appeared on "TV Mulher" on Rede Globo, which was one of Brazil's first shows for modern women. His TV career had many ups and downs over the years.

He had many female fans, but his strong opinions sometimes caused problems with co-workers. He hosted shows on different networks, including Rede Manchete and Rede Bandeirantes. Clodovil also trained as an actor and a singer. He designed evening gowns for beauty queens like Miss Brasil and Miss Universe contestants.

In 2006, a musical about Clodovil was performed in São Paulo. He also cared about protecting nature, like the Mata Atlântica forest in the Ubatuba region. He supported the rights of minority groups. Clodovil also planned to create "Casa Clô," a foundation to help women who didn't receive other social support.

Public Statements

Clodovil Hernandes sometimes made statements that caused strong reactions. These comments led to him being accused of prejudice. Due to some of his public remarks, he faced legal action during his artistic career.

In the 2006 elections, Clodovil Hernandes was elected as a federal congressman. He represented the state of São Paulo. He received a large number of votes, making him one of the most popular congressmen in his state. He was a member of the Christian Labour Party.

His political slogan was: "Brasília will never be the same." As a congressman, Clodovil supported laws to ban toys that looked like tobacco products. He also wanted to limit violent images in TV news during family viewing hours. Another goal was to reduce the number of congresspersons in the Brazilian parliament.

Later Life and Death

Clodovil Hernandes passed away in Brasília on March 17, 2009. He died after suffering a stroke.
