Cloverdale is a small, quiet community in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather a collection of homes and businesses. You can find it about five miles east of a town called Sisters, right along Oregon Route 126.

Discovering Cloverdale, Oregon

Cloverdale is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a place where people live and work, but it doesn't have its own city government or mayor. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

A Glimpse into Cloverdale's Past

In the late 1800s, Cloverdale was an important stop for travelers. It was on a special road called the A. J. Warrin Road. This road was an alternative path to another famous route, the Santiam Wagon Road. People used it to get to Prineville.

Cloverdale offered many services to these travelers and to local homesteaders. Homesteaders were people who settled on and farmed land given by the government. The community had a store, a blacksmith shop, and places for camping. Travelers could also board their horses there.

By the 1920s or 1930s, the A. J. Warrin Road was not used much anymore. The old buildings in Cloverdale either fell apart, were taken down, or moved to new locations.

How Cloverdale Got Its Name

Cloverdale was named by a local farmer named R. A. Ford. He was also a teacher and a school superintendent for the county. Mr. Ford surveyed, or carefully measured, the nearby Cloverdale Ditch. This ditch runs next to Whychus Creek.

The ditch is very important for the area because it helps with irrigation. Irrigation is how farmers bring water to their crops. Thanks to this water, farmers in Cloverdale can grow many things. These include clover, alfalfa, potatoes, different types of grasses, and vegetables.

Schools and Community Life

Around the year 1900, the first school in Cloverdale was built. It was a one-room schoolhouse known as the Old Cloverdale School. It was located on land owned by George Cyrus, on what is now called George Cyrus Road. Sometimes, people also called it the Cyrus School.

This historic school is recognized as an important historical building by Deschutes County. Later, a new school was built in 1919. This 1919 school building shares its location with the Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District station. As of 2011, the old school building was being used as a preschool.
