Clums Corners is a small community, called a hamlet, located in the town of Brunswick in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. It's a place where three important roads meet: New York Route 2 (Brunswick Road), New York Route 278 (Brick Church Road), and Tamarac Road (County Route 129). The Tamarac Schools are also nearby.

What is Clums Corners?

Clums Corners is a small settlement in New York State. It's not a city or a village, but a "hamlet." A hamlet is a small group of houses or buildings, often without its own local government. It's part of a larger town.

How Did Clums Corners Get Its Name?

This area is named after the Clum family. James Clum and later his son Orlin ran a blacksmith shop here. A blacksmith is someone who makes and repairs things out of metal, especially iron, using a hammer and fire. Their shop was active in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

History of the Area

Clums Corners has changed a lot over the years. It started as a quiet farming area.

The Little Red Schoolhouse

For many years, children in Clums Corners went to the Little Red Schoolhouse. Its official name was the Brunswick District No. 6 Schoolhouse. This school served the community until 1958.

The school closed when the Brunswick (Brittonkill) Central School District was formed. This new school district brought together several smaller schools. The opening of the larger Tamarac School meant that the Little Red Schoolhouse was no longer needed.

From Farmland to Modern Development

Before the school was built, Clums Corners was mostly farmland. It was even known as Clum's Flats. In the past, it was a popular spot for horse racing on Sunday afternoons. People would gather to watch horses race in this flat area.

Over time, the area began to develop. First, the Tamarac School was built on the north side of Route 2. Later, more buildings appeared on the south side. These included the Tamarac Plaza, which is a strip mall with several stores. A gas station, which is now called Cobble Pond, was also built. These changes transformed Clums Corners from a rural area into a more developed community.
