The Pacific Coast Ranges are a long chain of mountains that stretch along the western edge of North America. They are sometimes called the Pacific Mountain System in the United States. These mountains run all the way from Alaska in the north, through Canada and the United States, and down to Central Mexico in the south.
These ranges are a big part of the larger North American Cordillera. Think of the Cordillera as a huge system of mountain ranges that covers much of western North America. The Pacific Coast Ranges are the part of this system that is closest to the Pacific Ocean.

What are the Pacific Coast Ranges?
The Pacific Coast Ranges are not just one single mountain range. Instead, they are a group of many different mountain ranges and valleys that run parallel to the Pacific coastline. They include the mountains and low-lying areas (called basins) that are right next to the ocean.
These ranges are different from the Rocky Mountains. While the Rocky Mountains are also part of the North American Cordillera, they are located further inland. The Pacific Coast Ranges are special because they are right on the coast.
Where are these mountains located?
These mountains cover a huge distance, about 3,800 miles (6,100 kilometers) long! They pass through three different countries:
Because they are so long, the Pacific Coast Ranges experience many different climates. They can have snowy peaks in the north and warmer, drier areas in the south.
What makes them special?
The Pacific Coast Ranges are very important for many reasons. They help shape the weather along the coast. They also create beautiful landscapes with forests, rivers, and amazing views of the ocean. Many different kinds of plants and animals live in these mountains.
These ranges are also popular for outdoor activities. People enjoy hiking, camping, and exploring the natural beauty found here.
