Coates is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located west of the Upper Mississippi River in central Dakota County. This area is considered an "exurban fringe," meaning it's a rural area just outside a major city.
U.S. Highway 52 helps connect Coates north to the city of Saint Paul. County Road 46 runs east and west, linking Coates to other nearby towns. In 2010, 161 people lived in Coates. The town is named after Captain Henry C. Coates. He was a soldier in the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
Many jobs in Coates are in trucking, moving, and recycling. People from the nearby Twin Cities often visit Coates for a popular burger restaurant called the House of Coates, which opened in 1962. St. Agatha's Catholic Church also serves as the town's city hall.
Coates started as a rural post office hub in the early 1900s. Today, the U.S. Postal Service uses the address of the larger nearby city of Rosemount for Coates. The town of Coates officially became a city in 1953.
