Cobequid Bay is a large inlet of the Bay of Fundy. It is located in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. This bay is like a long arm of the ocean that reaches inland. It is famous for having the highest tides in the world!

Discovering Cobequid Bay

Cobequid Bay is the easternmost part of the Minas Basin. Rivers flowing into the eastern end of the Bay of Fundy helped to create this bay.

Where is it?

The eastern end of the bay is where the Salmon River flows in. This area is called an estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea. The western end of the bay is usually marked by Burntcoat Head on the south side. On the north side, it's near Five Islands or Economy Mountain.

Amazing Tides

Cobequid Bay is known for its incredible tides. The highest tides in the world have been measured at Burntcoat Head. Here, the water level can change by about 12.4 meters (41 feet) between low tide and high tide. This huge difference means the bay looks very different at different times of the day.

What's in a Name?

The name "Cobequid" comes from the Mi'kmaq language. The Mi'kmaq people are the Indigenous people of this area. Their name for the area was "We'kopekwitk." Later, Acadian settlers came to this region in the early 1700s. They spelled the name as "Cobequid."
