Cobleskill is a small village located in the western part of the town of Cobleskill. It is found in Schoharie County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 4,173 people lived there.

The village is located southwest of the city of Amsterdam. A college, the State University of New York at Cobleskill, is on the western side of the village.

History of Cobleskill

Cobleskill was first settled by people in 1752. It officially became a village in 1868.

How Cobleskill Got Its Name

The name Cobleskill comes from a German grist miller named Jacob Kobel. He built a mill on a local waterway. The Dutch word for a river or creek is kill. So, "Cobleskill" means "Cobel's creek."

Schoharie County Sunshine Fair

Since 1876, the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair has been held every year in Cobleskill. It used to be called the Cobleskill Sunshine Fair. This fair celebrates farming and brings in many thousands of visitors. People come to see livestock shows, exciting demolition derbies, and powerful tractor pulls.

Historic Places

The Cobleskill Historic District is an important area in the village. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it is recognized for its historical value.

Geography of Cobleskill

Cobleskill village covers about 3.3 square miles (8.5 square kilometers) of land. There is no significant water area within the village limits.

Elevation and Location

A special marker near the William H. Golding Middle School shows the elevation. It is 1,028 feet (313 meters) above sea level. Cobleskill is in a valley. This valley sits between two important geological areas of New York. To the south is the Catskill plateau. To the north is the Escarpment region of the Mohawk Valley.

The village is located north of the Cobleskill Creek.

Roads and Highways

Several important roads meet in Cobleskill. These include New York State Route 10, New York State Route 7, and New York State Route 145. Also, Interstate 88 passes just south of the village.
