Coburn Mountain is a cool mountain located in Somerset County, Maine. It stands tall at 3,717 feet above sea level. This mountain is an important part of the area's natural water system.

Water from Coburn Mountain flows into different streams and rivers. For example, water from its northern side goes into Mountain Brook, then Cold Stream, and finally the Kennebec River. Water from the southern part flows into Salmon Stream, which joins the Dead River. Both the Dead River and the Moose River are tributaries (smaller rivers that flow into a larger one) of the Kennebec River. So, all the water from Coburn Mountain eventually makes its way to the Kennebec River!

Mountain History

Coburn Mountain got its name from two brothers, Philander and Abner Coburn. They owned a lot of land in this area a long time ago. They also worked in the logging business, cutting down trees from the forests around the mountain.

Fun Activities

Coburn Mountain is a great place for outdoor adventures, especially in winter!

Snowmobiling

The summit of Coburn Mountain is special because it has the highest groomed snowmobile trail in Maine. A "groomed" trail means it's regularly smoothed out and prepared for riding. The trail to the top is 2 miles long and climbs about 2,500 feet.

  • The first part of the trail goes to a radio tower. This section is usually easy for all riders.
  • The last mile from the radio tower to the very top is more challenging. It's narrow, winding, and steep. This part is only recommended for experienced snowmobilers when the weather conditions are good.

The Coburn Summit Riders club takes care of this trail, making sure it's ready for everyone to enjoy.

Hiking and Views

At the very top of Coburn Mountain, you can find an old fire tower that is no longer used. If you're an adventurous hiker or snowmobiler, you can climb it for amazing 360-degree views of the surrounding area. It's a fantastic spot to see all the forests and mountains around you!

Past Ski Area

Years ago, from 1966 to 1974, there was a ski resort on the south side of the mountain. It was called the Enchanted Mountain Ski Area. It's not there anymore, but it was once a place where people came to ski down the slopes.
