Scientific classification

The Texas cone cactus, also known as the Chihuahuan beehive, is a special type of cactus. Its scientific name is Cochemiea conoidea. This cactus is native to parts of the United States and Mexico.

What is the Texas Cone Cactus?

The Texas cone cactus is a unique plant that grows in dry, desert areas. It's known for its cone-like shape and pretty flowers. Like many cacti, it's well-suited to living in places with very little water.

Where Does It Live?

This cactus is found in western Texas in the United States. It also grows in several states in Mexico, including Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas.

It is a natural part of two main types of plant communities:

  • The Chihuahuan Desert desert scrub. This is a large desert region in North America.
  • The Tamaulipan thorn scrub. This area has many thorny bushes and small trees.

What Does It Look Like?

The Texas cone cactus has a distinct shape. It is usually a single, tall cactus that looks like a cylinder.

  • It can grow up to 24 centimeters (about 9.6 inches) tall. That's almost a foot!
  • It can be up to 8 centimeters (about 3.2 inches) wide.

Its flowers are very colorful. The outer parts of the flower, called tepals (which are like petals), are whitish with green lines. The inner tepals are a bright pink-rose color, sometimes even magenta. After the flowers, the cactus produces fruits. These fruits are a pale yellow-olive color and contain small black seeds.
