Discovering Cockatoo Valley
How the Valley Got its Name
Europeans first explored and named this valley on March 3, 1838. A group of four young horsemen, including John Hill and John Oakden, were on an expedition. They were the first to travel overland from Adelaide to reach the River Murray at what is now Morgan.
When they camped in the valley, Oakden wrote that it was "swarming with cockatoos." They even shot seven cockatoos to roast for their supper! Because of the many cockatoos, they decided to name the area Cockatoo Valley. They also found a small stream, which they later named Yettie Creek.
Where is Cockatoo Valley Located?
Cockatoo Valley is part of several important areas for government and local services. It is located within the federal division of Barker. This is an area represented by a member of the Australian Parliament.
For state government, it is in the electoral district of Schubert. This means residents vote for a representative in the South Australian Parliament. Lastly, it is part of the local government area managed by the Barossa Council. This council helps with local services like roads and parks.
