What Does the Name Coevorden Mean?
The name Coevorden means "cow ford" or "cow crossing". A ford is a shallow place in a river or stream where you can walk or drive across. It's similar to the names Bosporus or Oxford, which also relate to animal crossings.
A Look at Coevorden's History
Coevorden became a city in 1408. This makes it the oldest city in the province of Drenthe.
The city was taken from the Spanish in 1592 by Dutch and English forces. These forces were led by Maurice, Prince of Orange. The next year, Spanish forces tried to take it back, but Coevorden held strong. The city was saved in May 1594.
After this, Coevorden was rebuilt in the early 1600s. It was designed like an "ideal city," similar to Palmanova in Italy. The streets were planned in a circle, spreading out from the center. The city also had strong walls and defenses around it.
How Coevorden Gave Its Name to Vancouver
The city of Coevorden also gave its name to Vancouver, a big city in Canada, and Vancouver, Washington, in the USA. These places were named after an explorer from the 1700s, George Vancouver.
His family's name, "van Coeverden," originally meant "from Coevorden." There is also a noble family with the last name van Coeverden, sometimes spelled with a "K."
