About Cohen Island

You might see Black oystercatcher birds near the island. These birds often look for food in the waters around Cohen Island.
How Cohen Island Got Its Name
The island was named by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey. Its name first appeared on a map in 1893.
The United States Geological Survey also recorded the name between 1976 and 1981. It was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on March 31, 1981. A historian named R. N. DeArmond believed the island was named after someone who lived in Juneau and Sitka.
