The coal mine was very important to the town for many years. But in 1947, the mine closed down. This was a big change for Cokedale.
In 2011, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake happened nearby. Cokedale was only about 5 miles from where the earthquake started.
Most of the town is part of the Cokedale Historic District. This district is a special area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Being on this list means the town's buildings and history are important to save.
