The Cold Spring Historic District is a special area in the village of Cold Spring, located in Putnam County, NY. It's called a historic district because it has many old buildings and places that are important to history. This district covers a large part of central Cold Spring.
The district is roughly bordered by Main Street, Cedar Street (NY 9D), Fair Street, and Paulding Avenue. It gives Cold Spring its unique and charming look. Many people say it's one of the best-preserved towns from the 1800s in the Hudson River area.
What Makes Cold Spring Special?
The Cold Spring Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's officially recognized as a place with important history and architecture.
A Glimpse into the Past
Most of the homes, churches, and other buildings you see today were built before the Civil War (which ended in 1865). This was a busy time for Cold Spring. The nearby West Point Foundry was making many things, and lots of workers moved to the area.
The district shows how people lived and worked back then. You can see the unique shops on Main Street. You can also notice the different types of houses and neighborhoods. The various churches, especially the Episcopal church built by the foundry owner, tell a story of the town's rich past.
A Living History Book
Today, the district includes over 200 buildings. Many of these are called "contributing properties." This means they help tell the story and show the history of the area.
The historic district has helped Cold Spring become a popular place to live. Many people who work in New York City live here and travel by train. It's also a favorite spot for weekend visitors from the city. They come to enjoy the historic charm, thanks to the nearby Metro-North train station.
