Colebrook Home facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Colebrook Home was a special place in South Australia where Aboriginal children lived for many years. It was run by a group called the United Aborigines Mission. The home was open from 1924 until 1981, and it moved to four different places during that time. It was first called Colebrook in 1927.

About Colebrook Home

Colebrook Home was located in four different places during its history.

The United Aborigines Mission first started a home in 1924. This was near a town called Oodnadatta. At that time, it was not yet known as Colebrook Home.

In 1927, the home moved to a place called Colebrook, which was just outside Quorn. This is when it became known as Colebrook Home. A businessman from Adelaide, A. E. Gerard, helped start Colebrook. He wrote about the home's early days in a book in 1944.

In 1944, the home moved again to Eden Hills, which is close to Adelaide. This location closed in 1972. Today, this site is a special place called the Colebrook Reconciliation Park. The original Colebrook site near Quorn is now a small Aboriginal community.

The last place Colebrook Home was located was in Blackwood. This is a suburb in the Adelaide Hills area of Adelaide.

Its Important Legacy

Colebrook Home is mentioned in a very important report called the Bringing Them Home Report. This report was written in 1997. It talked about places like Colebrook Home that cared for Indigenous children who were separated from their families.
