Small Communities in Colfax
Colfax Township also has a couple of smaller communities that have their own history.
Popple: A Historic Spot
- Popple is a very small community located in the southwest part of the township.
- It sits along M-53, a main road.
- The community is near the Pinnebog River, about five miles southwest of Bad Axe.
- Popple was first called "Finger Board" when it started in 1870.
- In 1882, it got a post office and its name changed to Popple. This new name came from the "popple tree," also known as the Populus tremuloides.
- The first postmaster was Samuel Hurd Wright.
- The post office closed in 1883, but it reopened later from 1883 until 1905.
Grassmere: A Railroad Stop
- Grassmere was once a railroad station and a post office.
- It was located right on the border with Oliver Township.
- The station was part of the Saginaw, Tuscola & Huron Railroad.
- The post office in Grassmere was open from 1891 to 1909. M. A. Vogel was its first postmaster.
