Colin Collindridge (born November 15, 1920 – died April 14, 2019) was an English footballer. He played as a winger on the left side or as a main striker. Colin was born in Barnsley, England. His early football career happened during World War II. After the war, he played for big clubs like Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest, and Coventry City in the Football League.

Colin Collindridge's Football Journey

Starting Out in Football

Colin Collindridge began his journey as a miner. He also played football as an amateur for a local team called Wombwell Main. In 1937, he had a tryout with Wolverhampton Wanderers. He didn't get a contract there.

The next year, he signed an amateur deal with Rotherham United. He played for them for one season. After that, he played for his hometown team, Barugh Green, in 1938.

Joining Sheffield United

It was at Barugh Green that Sheffield United noticed Colin. They signed him as an amateur player in December 1938. Just one month later, in January 1939, he became a professional player for them.

Colin first played for Sheffield United's reserve team. He made his first team debut in October 1939. By this time, World War II had already started. This meant that regular football games in England were stopped.

Playing During Wartime

During the war, Colin played often for Sheffield United in special wartime leagues. He also played as a guest player for other teams. These teams included Chesterfield, Notts County, Lincoln City, and Oldham Athletic.

By the end of the war, Colin was a key player for Sheffield United. He finally made his official Football League debut in August 1946. This was in a home game against Liverpool, which Sheffield United lost 1–0. Colin often played as a winger on the left. But he was also asked to play as a main striker, even though he preferred the wing.

Moving to New Clubs

In 1950, Colin decided not to join Preston North End. Instead, he signed with Nottingham Forest in August 1950. The transfer cost £12,500.

He helped Nottingham Forest win the Third Division South championship in the 1950–51 season. Colin stayed with Forest for four years. Then, in June 1954, he joined Coventry City for free. After two more seasons with Coventry City, his professional career was ending. He then played for non-league teams like Bath City in 1956. He finished his playing career with Arnold St Mary's.

Colin's Life Outside Football

Early Life and War Service

Colin Collindridge was born in the Barugh Green area of Barnsley. When he was young and starting his football career, he worked as a miner. He continued this job during the early years of the Second World War.

However, in 1941, Colin joined the RAF. He worked as an armourer, someone who takes care of weapons, for the rest of the war.

After His Football Career

After he stopped playing football, Colin worked in the catering business. This means he was involved in providing food and drinks for events. Later, he retired and lived in Newark-on-Trent.
