Collanmore Island is a cool island located in Clew Bay, which is in County Mayo, Ireland. Its name comes from the Irish words "Collainn Mhór".

What's Special About Collanmore Island?

Collanmore is one of the larger islands you'll find in Clew Bay. It used to be home to a special sailing school called Les Glénans. This school taught people how to sail different kinds of boats.

Sailing Adventures

At Les Glénans, you could learn to sail:

  • Dinghy boats: These are small sailboats, great for learning.
  • Catamaran boats: These boats have two hulls, making them fast and stable.
  • Sail-boarding: This is like surfing, but with a sail!

From Collanmore Island, you get amazing views of Croagh Patrick, a famous mountain, and the beautiful Clew Bay.

How to Get There

You can reach Collanmore Island by boat. Boats usually leave from Rosmoney pier. This pier is just a few kilometers from Westport, a town in County Mayo.

Who Lives There?

In 2011, only four people were officially living on Collanmore Island. It's a very quiet and peaceful place!

Island Population Over Time

The number of people living on Collanmore Island has changed a lot over the years. Long ago, many more people lived there.

In the mid-1800s, over 200 people called Collanmore home. But over time, the population slowly became smaller. By the 1960s, for a while, no one lived on the island at all!

However, in recent years, a few people have moved back. This shows how islands can change over time, with people moving on and off.
