Collospermum is a group of plants, also known as a genus, that belongs to the Asteliaceae family. Think of a genus as a small family of plants that are very closely related. All Collospermum plants grow naturally on different islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Scientists first officially described this group of plants in 1934. Today, there are 5 types, or species, of Collospermum that scientists recognize. Sometimes, Collospermum is even considered to be the same as another plant group called Astelia because they are so similar.

What are the Different Types of Collospermum?

There are five main types of Collospermum plants known today:

  • Collospermum hastatum: This type is found in New Zealand.
  • Collospermum microspermum: You can find this species on the North Island of New Zealand.
  • Collospermum montanum: This plant grows in Fiji and Vanuatu.
  • Collospermum samoense: This species is native to Samoa.
  • Collospermum spicatum: This type also grows on the North Island of New Zealand.
