Colman E. O'Flaherty was an Irish-born American Catholic military chaplain. He was born on April 24, 1878, and sadly passed away on October 3, 1918. He is remembered for his bravery during World War I. He received a very special award called the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic actions.
Early Life and Calling
Colman O'Flaherty was born in a place called Carraroe in Ireland. He started his education there. Later, he continued his studies in Lyons, France, where he learned to speak French very well. He also studied in Montreal, Canada.
On September 15, 1901, he became a Roman Catholic priest in Sioux Falls. For the next nine years, he worked in South Dakota, in towns like Chamberlain and Kimball. During this time, he helped build seven church buildings. He also played a big part in building Columbus College in Chamberlain. In 1910, he moved to Mitchell to lead the Holy Family Church. There, he was very important in developing Notre Dame Academy.
Serving in World War I
When World War I began, Colman O'Flaherty joined the American Expeditionary Force. This was the name for the American soldiers sent to fight in Europe. He went to France and served as an Army chaplain. Chaplains are like spiritual leaders or ministers for soldiers. He worked with the 28th Infantry, which was part of the 1st Infantry Division.
Chaplain O'Flaherty showed amazing courage. He helped wounded soldiers even when there was heavy gunfire. He put himself in danger to reach them and give them aid. Sadly, he was killed by shellfire on October 3, 1918.
After his death, he was given the Distinguished Service Cross. This is a very high award for bravery. The award said he showed "extraordinary heroism" near Very, France. It praised him for helping the wounded under "terrific fire" and for always exposing himself to reach them.

Colman O'Flaherty had a notable family. His older brother was Michael O'Flaherty, who became the Mayor of Galway in 1950. Colman's nephew, Patrick O'Flaherty, also became the Mayor of Galway in 1964.
