What is the Cologne Government Region?
The Cologne Government Region, also known as Regierungsbezirk Köln, is a way the state of North Rhine-Westphalia organizes itself. It helps the state government manage things like schools, roads, and public safety for a large area. It's like a big administrative office for a specific part of the state.
Where is it Located?
This region is found in the southwest part of North Rhine-Westphalia. It includes some beautiful natural areas. These include the rolling hills of the Eifel and the green landscapes of the Bergisches Land. It's a mix of cities and countryside.
How it Was Formed
The Cologne Government Region was created a long time ago, in 1815. At that time, a powerful kingdom called Prussia was reorganizing its lands. They set up these governmental districts to better manage their territories. This system has continued to be used in parts of Germany today.
Cities and Districts
The Cologne Government Region is made up of several smaller areas. These include both rural districts and larger cities that manage themselves.
Here are the rural districts, often called Kreise:
- Aachen
- Düren
- Euskirchen
- Heinsberg
- Oberbergischer Kreis
- Rhein Erft Rural District
- Rhein-Sieg Rural District
- Rheinisch-Bergische Rural District
And here are the big cities that are "district-free," meaning they manage their own affairs:
These cities and districts work together within the larger Cologne Government Region.
